Dust devil winds: Assessing dry convective vortex intensity limits at planetary surfaces

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract An estimate of the maximum winds associated with dry convective vortices is determined simply as Vmax = ΔT(2Cp/Ta)0.5, where ΔT equal to half surface-atmosphere temperature contrast, Cp specific heat capacity, and Ta background atmosphere. The estimate, resultant winds, have strong support from a wide range observations on Earth Mars. model results in predicted vortex 29, 53, 2.7 2.0 m/s for Earth, Mars, Titan Venus respectively, values latter two bodies being surface energy balance models. well-documented Mars appear be ~25 m/s and ~ 30 m/s consistent limits.

Electrostatic Dust Control and Collection on Planetary Surfaces

The Significance of Dust: Dust studies have already been identified as crucial components of missions to the Moon, Mars, asteroids, and Mercury over the next decade [1,2]. Detailed study of the physical and chemical nature of the fine particulate portion of regoliths of planetary bodies is a key to understanding micrometeorite bombardment and the nature of re-golith formation [e.g., 3]. The Pro...

A Multiyear Dust Devil Vortex Survey Using an Automated Search of Pressure Time Series

Dust devils occur in arid climates on the Earth and ubiquitously on Mars, where they likely dominate the supply of atmospheric dust and influence climate. Martian dust devils have been studied with a combination of orbiting and landed spacecraft, while most studies of terrestrial dust devils have involved manned monitoring of field sites, which can be costly both in time and personnel. As an al...

PLANETARY SCIENCE Dust observations at orbital altitudes surrounding Mars

Dust is common close to the martian surface, but no known process can lift appreciable concentrations of particles to altitudes above ~150 kilometers. We present observations of dust at altitudes ranging from 150 to above 1000 kilometers by the Langmuir Probe and Wave instrument on the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution spacecraft. Based on its distribution, we interpret this dust to be inte...

Winds, Bubbles, and Outflows in Planetary Nebulae

The aim of this work is to highlight the contributions that John Dyson has made to the study of the interstellar medium in general and, in particular, to the field of planetary nebulae. I review a few outstanding problems regarding the formation and evolution of outflows in planetary nebulae.

Dust-driven Winds Beyond Spherical Symmetry

New 2D dynamical models for the winds of AGB stars are presented which include hydrodynamics with radiation pressure on dust, equilibrium chemistry, time-dependent dust formation theory, and coupled frequency-dependent Monte Carlo radiative transfer. The simulations reveal a much more complicated picture of the dust formation and wind acceleration as compared to 1D spherical wind models. Trigge...
